Abstract

Background: The prevalence of gallstone disease is high worldwide and among the population of our country, and the number of associated gallstone removal surgeries is not decreasing for Mongolians. The issue of gallbladder removal surgery for a client diagnosed with asymptomatic gallstone disease is still controversial. Aim: To compare the quality of life of patients diagnosed with asymptomatic gallstone disease before and after cholecystectomy. Materials and Methods: Based on third state central hospital, between June 1, 2022 and April 10, 2023, the quality of life of 128 clients diagnosed with asymptomatic gallstone disease was assessed and followed up before and after cholecystectomy in a prospective hospital-based observational study. Quality of life before and after cholecystectomy was assessed using the SF-36 questionnaire. Statistical processing of research results was done using IBM SPSS 26 software. Results: The study included 128 doctors aged 25-84 who were diagnosed with asymptomatic gallstone disease and underwent gallbladder removal surgery. The average age of the participants was 52.3±12.5, 19.5% (n=25) were male and 80.5% (n=103) were female. The physical health-related quality of life of patients diagnosed with asymptomatic gallstone disease was 88.7±9.4 percent before surgery and 84.0±9.6 percent after surgery, which was statistically significant difference (p=0.000). Mental health-related quality of life was also statistically significantly reduced after surgery (p=0.000). Quality of life decreases after gallbladder removal surgery. In addition, the quality of life related to the vitality of the patients with gallstone disease was on average 48±8 percent or less. Conclusion: Patients diagnosed with asymptomatic gallstone disease and undergoing elective cholecystectomy had lower physical and mental health-related quality of life.
