Abstract

Background: Among the clinical forms of epilepsy 60% is focal epilepsy, 40% of them is temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE).1 Impairment of cognition such as language, attention, and executive function impairments and memory loss is the most common in epilepsy. Seizures are one of the main symptoms of any form of epilepsy and long-term use of anti-seizure medication and increased seizure frequency can lead to a decline in memory, cognition, daily self-care, and loss of knowledge, skills, and experience acquired throughout life furthermore this creates the conditions for behavior change.2 Aim: To determine behavioral changes and cognitive impairment of epilepsy and clinical characteristics, and risk factors affecting cognitive impairment. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study included general pattern and behavior change of epilepsy in 337 epileptic patients of the National Center of Mental Health, and 50 patients with temporal lobe epilepsy participated a questionnaire to determine general clinical information for seizures and cognitive impairment. Results: Based on the EEG and clinical manifestation, 50 (10.8%) patients participated in this study. The mean age of the respondents was 43.78±8.20 year, the mean age of onset of seizure was 14.54±9.47, and 26 (52%) were male and 24 (48%) were female. The common etiology was structure changes at 22%, meningitis at 18%, and unknown causes at 48%. The most common symptoms of cognitive changes were memory impairment (66%) and attention deficit (52%), with a risk of memory impairment increased by 1.31% with increasing age by one (P=0.04). Conclusion: In temporal lobe epilepsy, cognitive impairment is prevalent including memory impairment (66%) and attention deficit (52%) furthermore age of patient has major effect on memory impairment. In addition, high frequency of seizure is a risk factor for behavioral changes.
