Abstract

Background: Facial profile analysis is the most significant procedure for dental and facial orthodontic treatment. The nasolabial angle is one of the most essential components to evaluate in an orthodontic diagnostic as it guides the aesthetics of the nose and facial profile. The aim of this study was to determine the ideal nasolabial angle objectively. Aim: The aim of this study is to find out the mean values for nasolabial angular measurements of the facial soft tissue profile in Mongolian children and establish age and gender-specific lateral cephalometric soft tissue measurement norms. Materials and Methods: Cephalograms of 541 subjects (225 male and 316 females) that were obtained at ages 6-15 years were used. Subjects were orthodontically untreated Mongolians and had Class I dentoskeletal relationships (ideal overjet and overbite). Powell and Ricketts’s soft-tissue cephalometric analysis was done on these cephalograms. Results: The nasolabial angle decreases from age increases in both boys and girls. There was no statistically significant difference in the mean normal nasolabial angle between the sexes. The mean angle for Mongolian children’s nasolabial angle was a significant difference from children of other nations. Conclusion: Our results showed that the nasolabial angle (Ls-Sn-Col) of Mongolian children has an increasing effect with age. This shows that changes in the harmony between the nose and lips due to the growth and development of the hard and soft tissues of the jaw and face will affect the appearance of the face, and it is necessary to properly adjust the dose of the growth correction medicine during diagnosis and treatment planning.
