Abstract

Background: According to a study by J. Nyamsuren et al., 11.0% (95% CI: 8.8-13.7) of 634 cesarean births in 3 maternity hospitals in 2017 were recorded. In Anderson et al.’s study, US$10,443 was spent per SSI, while in Stone et al.’s study, US$25,546 was spent per infection. To calculate the economic costs, these researchers compared the direct and indirect costs of treatment with the current year’s consumer price index. Objectives: To determine the rate of SSI s and to estimate economic losses for infected patients. Materials and method: Retrospectivily studied the incidence of SSI and economic burden. Results: Nationwide, in 2015-2020, 53,704 (4.2%) of the total 1,270,515 surgeries were performed. 6,669 (42.9%) of the 15,658 surgeries performed at SSCH in 2015-2020 were laparoscopic surgeries. SSI was 63(0.4%). In 2019, 28 (44.4%) of SSI were registered. The average number of bed days for a patient by SSI is 8 in 2015, 48 in 2016, 18 in 2017, 13.93 in 2018, 18.96 in 2019, and 15 in 2020. In 2015 year, the average cost of medications to patient affected by SSI was 170,533 MNT, in 2016 it was 7,017,249.00 MNT, in 2017 it was 3,053,869.50 MNT, in 2018 it was 1,303,683.45 MNT, in 2019 it was 563,194.04 MNT, and in 2020 it was 391,304.33 MNT. The average cost financed by the Health Insurance Fund for the hospital for one patient affected by SSI is 346656.2 MNT, while the average cost paid by the insured is 62,087.19 MNT. In 2015-2020 years, 63/25 (39.7%) of the patients who were affected by SSIs were of working age. 18 of them are male and 7 are female. The economic damage caused by the temporary loss of working ability is 25493.7 tsousand MNT. Conclusion. The prevalence of SSIs in SSCH is 63 (0.4%). In 2015–2020, the average medication cost of a patients affected by SSI was 1,135,092.23 MNT. the average cost of medicine for an infected patient exceeded the cost financed by the Health Insurance Fund by 788,436 MNT. The economic damage caused by temporary incapacity is 18550.3 tsousand MNT for men and 6943.4 tsousand MNT for women.
