Keywords:
cigarette smoking, ankle-brachial pressure index, peripheral artery diseaseAbstract
Background: The peripheral artery disease (PAD) refers to diseases of the blood vessels located outside the heart and brain and which covers wide range of health issues. In a worldwide, total of 202 million individuals are affected by peripheral artery disease (PAD). Globally, total of 202 million population are suffering from PAD. In addition, 69.7% of them are living in a middle and low-income countries, 54.8% of them are living in East southern Asia and 45.9% of them are living in western region of Pacific Ocean. According to the study conducted in Mongolia, patients who have undergone by surgery were smoking for average 33±15.2 years and they smoke an average 12.7±7.19 pieces of cigarette daily. It proves that smoking is the main risk factor for developing peripheral artery disease and its complication. Materials and Methods: The study participants were aged between 50-69 years, total of 141 individuals and they were nonsmokers and smokers. Moreover, ankle-brachial pressure index was measured which is the early screening test for peripheral artery disease. Results: Total of 141 smoking individuals (average age was 60,5) were participated in the study. Furthermore, 91,5% of them were males and 8,5% of them were females. The daily consuming amount of cigarette was 10.83 and the average years of smoking were 31.8. Moreover, 55.3% of peripheral artery disease. The average ankle brachial pressure index was 0.88. Daily consuming average amount of cigarette increases risk of getting peripheral artery disease and abnormal ankle brachial pressure index (p=0.037). Conclusion: 1. The prevalence of peripheral artery disease (PAD) is high among smokers aged 50-69 in Uvurkhangai province 2. As the number of cigarettes smoked per day increases, the risk of developing PAD increases (p=0.037). As the number of years of smoking increases, the risk of developing COPD increases (p = 0.156).
