Abstract

Background: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is an incompletely studied disease at this time. 50-70 percent of all cases diagnosed as vestibular disorders are Idiopathic Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). Numerous studies have compared risk factors such as female gender, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, osteoporosis, vitamin D deficiency with IBPPV. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the relation between some risk factors and the incidence of IBPPV. Materials and Methods: From January 2021 to August 2021, serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D of 60 patients who were diagnosed as IBPPV at EMJJ Vestibular center in Mongolia. The diagnosis of BPPV was made according to the 2017 AAO-HNS clinical practice guideline of BPPV. Serum vitamin D level was evaluated by EIA & Chemiluminescence Analyzer, at UB central laboratory. Results: A study had 47 female and 13 male patients, whose age range was between 22-76 (mean age 52.16±11.45). Females were more likely to be diagnosed with BPPV than males. Regardless of sex incidence of BPPV was most common between the 5-6th decade of life. The recurrence of BPPV is most likely to happen in older patients (p<0.05). 60% (n=36) of the patients had posterior canal, 31,7% (n=19) had horizontal canal, and 8.3% (n=5) had anterior canal BPPV. 12 patients had geotropic, and 7 patients had apogeotropic horizontal canal BPPV. The mean serum vitamin D level was 18.6 ng/ml. Regular exercise per week was 31.7%, and the average body mass index was 26.58 kg/m2. Conclusion: There was a statistically significant correlation between serum vitamin D level and incidence of IBPPV.
