Abstract

Background: The appendix has been shown to function as a lymphoid organ, which has been main role in host immune responses by producing the class of antibodies known as immunoglobulin A (IgA) antibodies. Although the non-pathogenic E. coli exists as a commensal in the intestine, it may be involved in opportunistic infections among the immunocompromised, children and the elderly group of people. Moreover E.coli (DEC) patterns could be the cause of various inflammatory diseases at times. For this reason, we aimed to detect DEC pattern isolates from surgically resected appendices. Results: Our study result shows that DEC pathogens were detected in 51.4% (55/107) of 107 E.coli samples, identification from surgically resected appendices’ samples which were collected in the bacteriological laboratory of the Second State Central hospital, between January and June 2021. The bfpA gene encoding a specific fimbria was not detected, and the eae gene was detected in 36.4% (39/107) for EPEC. So, the eae gene was detected in 39 strains that were evaluated as atypical EPEC. In our study, we defined thirty nine EPEC, eight DAEC, five EHEC, two EIEC, and the one EAEC, respectively due to DaaE gene, encoding adhesin protein 8 (7.47%), stx2 gene, encoding shigatoxin 5 (4.67%), ipaH gene, encoding invasive antigen 2 (1.86%), and aggR gene, encoding an operator 1 (0.93%) were detected by multiplex PCR, respectively. Conclusion: Detection of DEC patterns before an appendectomy might be effective in making a decision for treatment because high incidence of DEC patterns among the surgically resected appendices’ samples were found in our study.
