Prevalence, underlying comorbidities of sepsis-associated mortality in rural hospitals of Mongolia
Keywords:
Sepsis, Mortality, Prevalence, ComirbiditiesAbstract
Introduction: Sepsis is present in many hospitalizations that culminate in death in the world. The contribution of sepsis to these deaths is unknown in Mongolian rural hospitals. Objective: To estimate sepsis-associated mortality rates and to assess the related comorbidities. Methods: From multiple causes of in hospital death data of the Rural region (Mongolia), all adults died with sepsis mentioned anywhere in the death reports were reviewed. Among these deaths the prevalence of common chronic comorbidities was investigated. Results: The study cohort included 481 patients of 308 or 64% men; mean age, 56.5 years who died in the hospital. Sepsis was the immediate cause of death in 122 cases or 25%; mean age, 56.5 years, men was 51 or 3.7%. The most common underlying causes of death in patients with sepsis were 17 or 17.8% chronic liver disease and 19 or 20% arterial hypertension. Respiratory tract and intra-abdominal infections were the most frequently associated sites of infection. Sepsis exposure in rural hospitals of our country was 40%. According to the logistic regression analysis, source of infection and the location of the rural hospitals showed a statistically significant difference. Conclusions: In Mongolian rural hospitals, sepsis mortality rate is high. Detection of TB causative agents needs to be studied in more detail.
