Effect of Mongolian garlic ( Allium savitum L) extract on gastric ulcer in rat model and antioxidant activity
Keywords:
Allium savitum L, gastric ulcer, garlic extractAbstract
The aim of this study investigate the anti-ulcer effect in acetic acid induced gastric ulcer in rats and antioxidant activity of Mongolian garlic (Allium sativum L) extract. The garlic cloves crushed and mixed with 70% ethanol (ratio 1:2). The obtained dry extract from lyophilized in garlic extract. The gastric ulcer was induced by acetic acid (Okabe, 1971). Antioxidant activity of the garlic extract was examined by neutralizing the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). 36 Wistar rats were used in the present study and divided into 4 groups as: group I was given distilled water, group II given omeprazole 20 mg/kg, group III given garlic extract 250 mg/kg and group IV given garlic extract 500 mg/kg, respectively. The gastric ulcer regeneration determined on 7th, 14th and 21st day of experiment by histological picture. Gastric ulcer of the treatment and control group was regenerated by new epithelial cellsand healing process was shown as histologically after 21 days. Garlic extract antioxidant activity were 74.8±0.02% in 1000 µg/ml, respectively. As a result of this study, Mongolian garlic (Allium savitum L) extract is as effective as healing and improving regeneration of gastric ulcer on rat model. Moreover, Mongolian garlic has the antioxidant activity.
