Abstract

Background: There are factors related to the mortality of hemodialysis patients, including the anemia, predict all-cause mortality in this population. Aim: The purpose of our study was to determine this blood cell abnormalities among hemodialysis patient in hemodialysis centers. Method: We performed descriptive study of 84 patients undergoing hemodialysis from 4 centers in Ulaanbaatar. Data on CBC, serum iron, ferritin, ESA dosing and iron supplementation in addition to demographic data were collected. We then evaluated the levels of hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (HCT), MCV, MCH in the complete blood count. Statistical significance was determined at a p value lower than 0.05. All statistical analysis was performed using STATA (version 14). Result: Mean hemoglobin concentration was 10.34±1.27 g/dl, RBC 3.59±0.58 x1012/l, HCT 31.36±4.87% Seventy-eight patients (92.8%) had anemia, thirty-one patients (36.9%) had iron deficiency. In all of 84 hemodialysis patients have constantly prescribed ESA, mean weekly prescribed dose of ESA was 8975.6±2918.5 IU. Information on ferritin concentration was available for thirty-nine patients (46.42%). Ten patients (11.9%) were assessed as having adequate iron store by KDOQI. None of 84 patients had transferrin saturation values recorded. Conclusion: In conclusion ESA therapy is not enough for IDA among hemodialysis patient. There is opportunity to improve anemia management by iron supplementation therapy in hemodialysis patients.
