A study of nasal septal deviation in relation to craniometric parameters

Background: Lately diseases caused by nasal septal deviation have been rapidly growing among ear, nose and throat patients. Researchers such as Fischer (2006) have noted that during this condition, a person’s nasal breathing becomes obstructed which leads to dyspnea, fatigue, snoring during sleep, mental retardation. In which case nasal breathing may need to be resuscitated with surgical procedure called septolasty. The structural elements of the nose is crucial in septoplasty. According to Toriumi (2016), the choice of the surgical method depends on the structure of the nasal bone and the availability of specific information about it are important to prevent post-operative complications such as tissue edema, hematoma. There are limited numbers of studies about correlation between craniometric measurements and nasal septal deviation in Mongolia and that was the reason of our study. Aim of the study: To study some craniometric parameters in Mongolian adults in relation to the nasal septal deviation Materials and methods of the study: Within the scope of the study, a total of 113 (n=113) men and women aged 15-70 years with or without nasal septal deviation were examined on computed tompography and 29 craniometric parameters, a total of 3277 units were measured using Radiant DICOM software Results: In patients with nasal septal deviation inter-orbital breadth was 2.44±0.27 cm, the palatal length was 2.65±0.23 cm, the maxillary breadth was 7.53±0.46 cm, the intermediate nasal bone thickness on the left side was 1.32±0.33 cm and the lateral nasal bone thickness on the left side was 1.44±0.42 cm. According to this we conclude that in case of nasal septal deviation the inter-orbital breadth, the maxillary breadth, the intermediate nasal bone thickness on the left side, the lateral nasal bone thickness on the left side increase was statistically significant, while the palatal length decrease was statistically significant. 28 out of 53 men with deviated nasal septum and 14 out of 24 women with deviated nasal septum had moderately deviated septum. Conclusion: In the case of nasal septal deviation the palatal length, maxillary breadth, the intermediate and lateral nasal bone thicknesses were statistically significantly changed. Moderately deviated septum was predominant in both men and women.
