Abstract

The jugular bulb forms after 2 years of age and its size remain constant during adulthood. Identification and correct diagnosis of the jugular bulb are obligatory to prevent its traumatization and hemorrhage during middle ear surgical procedure. This study aimed to assess the normal and abnormal position and the dimension of the jugular bulb in Mongolian individuals older than 20 years who had temporal bone computed tomography, selected randomly. Jugular bulb variations were evaluated in the axial coronal section of the temporal bone CT scan. In 99 patients, 54 of 198 (27.27%) temporal bones illustrated morphological anomalies of the jugular bulb. The frequency of high riding jugular bulb (HRJB) without dehiscence, HRJB with dehiscence, and HRJB with diverticulum 46 (23.23%), 6 (3.03%), and 2 (1.01%), respectively. The mean of the anterioposterior and mediolateral dimensions of the jugular bulb in the abnormal jugular bulb was significantly greater than the normal jugular bulb (p<0.0001).
