According to the Multi-Diabetes Association the number of people with diabetes worldwide is estimated at 463 million and will reach 700 million by 2045. Type 2 diabetes accounts for 90 percent of all types of diabetes, and some polymorphisms in the ABCC8 gene, which encodes the ATP-sensitive potassium channel Sur1 protein involved in pancreatic beta cell insulin secretion, contribute to type 2 diabetes. Recently studies show that the rs1799854 polymorphism of the ABCC8 gene may be associate for the development of type 2 diabetes. We selected the study using a case-control model, 93 patients in the control group, and 93 people in the control group to determine the rs1799854 polymorphism of the ABCC8 gene by isolating DNA from blood and to analyze total cholesterol, HDL, LDL and triglycerides, glucose hemoglobin, and fasting blood glucose. The results of the study showed that the body mass index was statistically significant in the case and control groups, while the levels of glucose, glycated hemoglobin and triglycerides were statistically different in type 2 diabetes group (p<0.05). The frequency of the TT genotype and T allele of the rs1799854 polymorphism of the ABCC8 gene was higher in the type 2 diabetes group (p<0.05). The higher the frequency of the mutant T allele and TT genotype in the case group, suggesting that they may be more susceptible to type 2 diabetes.
