Abstract

Background: Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis in the world It reduces the quality of life causes disability, and often affects the hand and knee joints. Electrical moxibustion therapy with nutritious wrap’s herbal and heat affection has peripheral vasodilation, improving the nerves, blood, and fluid, which microcirculation of the affected area, reducing joint yellow hemolymph, suppressing inflammation, and relieving pain. The rationale of our study is to investigate the possibility of clinical practical efÏcacy in knee osteoarthritis. Aim: Evaluate the clinical efÏcacy of moxibustion therapy with nutritious wrap in knee osteoarthritis Materials and Methods: A total of 40 participants between the ages of 40 and 80, who met the criteria for inclusion in the study, with osteoarthritis diagnosed in the Mongolian Medical Central Hospital from January 2024 to March 2024 were enrolled. Participants were divided into electrical moxibustion therapy with nutritious wrap group and Bragshun electrophoresis group. According to the instructions approved by the Mongolian Medical Central Hospital of MNUMS on 11/13/2023 participants in electrical moxibustion therapy with an herbal wrap group received 15-20 minutes daily for a total of 5 days, Bragshun electrophoresis observation group received 15-20 minutes daily for a total of 5 days. Participants with knee osteoarthritis in the study were diagnosed by the Mongolian traditional medicine, diagnostic criteria from the ARC, and X-ray. Range of motion and joint stiffness will be assessed using the WOMAC test and VAS scale. The participants’s quality of life will be assessed using the EQ-5D-5L scale. Statistical analysis of the study data will be conducted using the STATA 17.0 program. Results: In the study, the average age of participants was 62.5±8.24 years, with 54% being female and 46% male. Following electrical moxibustion therapy with nutritious wrap, statistically significant improvements were observed in mobility (p<0.001), self-care (p<0.001), usual activities (p<0.001), pain/discomfort (p<0.001), and anxiety/depression (p<0.001) as assessed by the EQ-5D-5L scale. Their health status improved from 66±13.850 points to 71±820 points after treatment, with a statistically significant difference. The severity of pain decreased significantly from 7.2±1.41 to 4.3±1.70 according to the VAS score. When assessed by WOMAC, there were statistically significant improvements in pain (p<0.001), stiffness (p<0.001), and physical function (p<0.001). The study showed more favorable outcomes in reducing pain and improving function in electrical moxibution therapy with nutritious wrap compared to those Bragshun electrophoresis. Conclusion: Electrical moxibustion therapy with nutritious wrap has a positive effect on improving the quality of life of participants with a diagnosis of II-III osteoarthritis, providing clinical results in parameters such as mobility, selfcare, usual activities, pain/discomfort, and anxiety/depression.
