Artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) has been successfully cultivated in our country for the last 5 years in the geographical conditions of our country. We studied nephroprotective activity aqueous extract of Artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) growing in Mongolia by measuring serum urea, creatinine, and uric acid and by histopathological examination renal tissue in rats with gentamicin induced nephrotoxicity. When compared with pathology group, significant (p<0.05) decrease in serum urea, creatinine and urine acid levels at 7th, 14th and 21st experimental days was observed in experimental groups who received Artichoke extract with the dose of 300mg/kg and 500mg/kg and in standard group who received Canephron. Measurements of the kidney histopathology at 7th, 14th and 21st experimental days showed renal tubule necrosis, renal tubules degeneration and interstitial nephritis (50-75%) in pathology group. In the groups received artichoke extract with the dose of 300mg/kg and 500mg/kg, necrosis and degeneration of renal tubules and interstitial nephritis (0-25%) were observed. Compared to pathology group, necrosis of renal tubules, degeneration of renal tubules and interstitial nephritis were two to three times less among experimental groups, indicating nephroprotective activity.
