Keywords:
Nepeta sibirica L, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, DPPH radical scavenging activityAbstract
In this study, 70 % ethanolic extract, 40 % ethanol extract and aqueous extract of the aerial parts of Nepeta sibirica L. growing in Mongolia, was investigated for their total phenols, total flavonoids contents and DPPH radical scavenging activity. The aerial parts of Nepeta sibirica L. were collected on July 26, 2006 at the Altai mountains, steppe, Gobi-Altai aimag, Jargalant sum, Khasagt khairkhan, Dund sharin davaa. According to our study, the total phenolic compounds (gallic acid equivalents, %) 3.74±0.05 in 70% ethanolic extract, 3.94±0.04 in 40% ethanolic extract, and 3.79±0.16 in aqueous extract and the total flavonoid (rutin equivalents, %) 2.01±0.12, 1.44±0.17 and 1.99±0.02 were determined respectively. DPPH radical scavenging activity of these extracts was calculated as (IC50, µg/ml) 284.77±1.89, 198.80±1.58 and 134.24±1.42, showed weak activity, while the latter aqueous extract was relatively strong activity. These findings provide the basis for further research into the phytochemical, biological and pharmacological activity of the Nepeta sibirica L.
