A comparative study of the clinical efficacy of certain drugs in patients with type ii diabetes
Keywords:
HbA1c, sulphonylurea, metformin, type 2 diabetes mellitusAbstract
The study was planned to determine the efficacy and safety of glimepiride alone and combination glimepiride and metformin therapy with insufficiently controlled type 2 diabetes. This was an open-labeled study with a follow up period 26 weeks. 12 patients were 2 mg glimepiride two times and 500 mg metformin two times before breakfast per day. The primary efficacy measure was the mean change HbA1c, fasting plasma glucose (FPG) level from baseline to the end of the study. Mean HbA1c levels decreased significantly from 9.34±2.1% to 8.25±0.84% (p<0.001) at 26 week. Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels fell from 160.32±34.4 mg/dl to 133.56±28.0 mg/dl (p<0.001), respectively. This study confirms that the sulphonylurea and metformin treatment for patients with type 2 diabetes improves glycemic control, is safe, and generally well tolerated.
