Acute toxicity and histopathological assessments of nepeta sibirica l
Keywords:
LD50, OECD, Nepeta sibirica L, toxicity, histopathologyAbstract
The acute oral toxicity of Nepeta sibirica L was studied according to the OECD Guideline 423 in mice of the C57BL/6 breed. After oral administration of aqueous extract in doses of 500 mg/kg, 1000 mg/kg, 1500 mg/kg, 2000 mg/kg, 3000 mg/kg, 4000mg/kg and 5000 mg/kg, the mice were physically active and no behavioral changes and toxic symptoms were observed within 2 hours. The LD50 of Nepeta sibirica L is considered to be greater than 5000 mg/kg based on the observation of no mortality cases in all dose groups after 24, 48, and 72 hours. In terms of the body weight, absolute and relative weight of organs of the mice, the difference between the control group and experimental dose groups of 500 mg/kg, 1000 mg/kg, 1500 mg/kg, 2000 mg/kg, 3000 mg/kg, 4000 mg/kg and 5000 mg/kg of aqueous extract of Nepeta sibirica L was statistically not significant (p>0.05). Histopathological assessment of the liver, heart, kidneys, heart, spleen and lungs of mice treated with aqueous extract of Nepeta sibirica L at doses of 500 mg/kg, 1000 mg/kg, 2000 mg/kg, 4000 mg/kg and 5000 mg/kg demonstrated normal tissue structure. According to the OECD guideline, the oral toxicity of Nepeta sibirica L aqueous extract is classified as practically nontoxic.
