Abstract

The burden of kidney disease has risen rapidly in recent years, reaching more than 750 million people worldwide and became a global public health problem. The complex herbal preparation was prepared from the aqueous extract of Rosa acicularis Lindl, 70% ethanol extract of the leaves of Cynara scolymus L, and 70% ethanol extract of Dasiphora fruticosa L. The ratio of the herbals for preparation was 2:2:1. The concentration required for a 50% reduction (IC50) of complex herbal preparation is 91.86 μg/ml which means antioxidant activity. The LD50 of complex herbal preparation is greater than 5000 mg/kg, which is classified as practically nontoxic according to the OECD guideline. Compared to pathology group, decrease in creatinine level by 1.67, 1.99, and 2.35 times (p <0.05); in serum urea levels by 2.2, 3.0, and 3.64 times (p <0.05), in uric acid levels by 1.34, 1.49, and 1.61 times (p <0.05) respectively in experimental group who received herbal preparation for gentamicin sulfate induced acute nephritis. Histopathological examination revealed renal tubular necrosis, tubular degeneration, and interstitial inflammatory changes in 25-50 percent of the total visual field in the experimental groups. This indicates that the complex herbal preparation has nephroprotective activity.
