Antibacterial and hemolytic assay of garlic extract and garlic extract-loaded gelatin nanoparticles
Keywords:
garlic, antibacterial effect, hemolytic effectAbstract
Introduction: Garlic has been recognized as an effective agent against bacterial infection and cancer. Purpose: In the current study, we obtained various extracts from Mongolian and Chinese garlic and then prepared garlic extract-loaded gelatin nanoparticles to investigate their antibacterial and hemolytic effect. Materials and methods: The antibacterial effect was carried out by disc diffusion method and broth dilution method, and the hemolytic assay was performed by using UV-vis spectrophotometer Results: According to the result, ethanol extracts from Mongolian and Chinese garlic had antibacterial effect with diameter of 15 mm by disc diffusion method. Interestingly, the ethanol extract of Chinese garlic also produced a relatively higher rate of antibacterial effect with minimal inhibitory concentration of 16 mg/ml. As for the hemolytic assay on the garlic extracts and nanoparticles, no hemolysis was observed in all groups. Conclutson: hence, the results showed that the garlic extracts had antibacterial effects and produced no influence on red blood cells.
