Abstract

Background: There are lack of study evidence of umbilical cord lactate and blood acid-base status which predicts neonatal metabolic conditions. Purpose: We conducted this study to estimate the utility of umbilical blood acid –base for predicting neonatal metabolic condition at term. Materials and methods: Analytical cross sectional study design was used. 112 term neonates and their mothers are included in this study from 2016 to 2017 in Delivery Department of National Center for Mother and Child Health of Mongolia. Special card is used to collect information. Umbilical cord metabolic acidosis is evaluated by acid-base balance and lactate. 0.5 ml blood was extracted from umbilical cord artery with heparin containing tube and referred to laboratory of National Center for Mother and Child Health of Mongolia within 30 minutes. Fully Automate Analyser was used. Neonatal well-being condition is assessed by Apgar scoring system. Results: According to the acid-base balance 8.9% (n=10) of participants were with acidosis and according to the lactate level 4.5% (n=5) were with acidosis. Conclusion: Primigravida, duration of second stage of labor, amniotic fluid color, delivery mode and neonatal weight are the risk factors of umbilical cord metabolic acidosis. (p<0.05).
