Abstract

Background: Inappropriate use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) is a concern, particularly in the aнгelderly with comorbidities and polymedications, as it increases drug-drug interactions, side effects, and unnecessary costs in the longterm use. The knowledge, approach, and practices of doctors, pharmacists, and nurses about proton pump inhibitors are important factors affecting the proper use of drugs, and studying the use of proton pump inhibitors and the knowledge, approach, and practice of medical professionals about drugs is important to improve the proper use of drugs is the basis for the research. Aim: The aim and objectives were to evaluate the impact of the clinical pharmacist’s intervention on the knowledge, approach, and practice of the medical professionals of the Third State Central Hospital. Materials and Methods: A study to determine the knowledge, approach, and practices of medical professionals of the surgical department of the Third State Central Hospital regarding proton pump inhibitor drugs was conducted using a cross-sectional survey, and a prospective pre-post intervention research method was used to evaluate the effect of the clinical pharmacist’s intervention on the knowledge, approach, and practices of proton pump inhibitor drugs. Survey data were analyzed using SPSS-26.0 statistical software. Results: Out of 96 participants, 33 (34.37%) doctors, 60 (62.50%) nurses and 3 (3.13%) pharmacists, 28 (29.17%) of the respondents were male and 68 (70.83%) were female. In terms of age, 18-30 (35.42%) and 31-40 (32.29%) age groups are the majority. The average knowledge score of medical professionals was 12.13±2.74 before the intervention and increased to 15.42±2.29 after the intervention. Gender (r=-0.35, p<0.001) and specialty (r=0.48, p<0.001), educational level (r=0.21, p=0.041), years of experience (r=0.22, p<0.001) had statistically significant correlation with the knowledge score of medical professionals in the surgical department. The group of doctors was different compared to the group of nurses (p<0.05) but not statistically different from the group of pharmacists. Conclusions: Medical professionals of the surgery department have 12.13±2.74 points of proton pump inhibitor drug knowledge, 15.73±2.1 points of appropriate use, and 25.44±2.26 points of attitude. The intervention of a clinical pharmacist improved the knowledge, practices and attitudes of medical professionals in the surgical department about proton pump inhibitors, but did not influence practice. Therefore, continuous training of medical professionals is needed to improve the appropriate use of proton pump inhibitors.
