Abstract

Background: According to the 2022 figures of the World Health Organization, 7.9 billion people are living in the world, and about 55.4 million people die every year. Of these deaths, 4.4 million people died as a result of accidents or injuries. The incidence of death and illness due to accidents among the population of Mongolia has increased dramatically in recent years, and the cause of accidents is the 5th cause of illness and the 3rd cause of death by 2022. Aim: Calculating the lost years of life for children aged 0-15 who died due to accidents in Mongolia Materials and Methods: We conducted this study using a discrete research design. The quantitative data of the study was used from the General Data of the State Registration OfÏce and the Health Development Center’s unified database of 1454 deaths of children aged 0-15 years who died due to accidents in Mongolia in 2016-2020. Estimates of years of life lost were calculated using the WHO Burden of Disease Methodology based on data from 1,454 injury-related deaths over five years. Results: Between 2016 and 2020, 13,551 deaths due to accidents were recorded in Mongolia, 10.7% of which were 0-15 years old. 61.6% of the deaths of children aged 0-15 are male and 38.4% are female. A total of 1,454 children died due to accidents over 5 years, resulting in a loss of 97,559 life years. One child loses an average of 67±6 years. In terms of gender, it was determined that men lose 57,925 years and women lose 39,634 years of life. Considering the years of life lost due to accidents by age group, 61,226 (62.8%) years were lost for 0-4-year-olds, 15,240 (15.6%) years for 5-9-yearolds, and 21,093 (21.6%) years for 10-15-year-olds. 0-4-year-olds lost 12,138 years due to harm to others, 5-9-year-olds lost 5,110 years due to trafÏc accidents, and 10-15-year-olds lost 6,800 years due to suicide. Conclusions: In Mongolia, 1,454 children died due to accidents in 2016-2020, resulting in 97,559 years of life lost. On average, one child loses 67±6 years of life. Men lost 1.5 times more years than women.
