Background: Throughout history for a long time in Mongolia, as well as other countries we have been using medicinal herbs to heal different ailments. Papaver rubro-aurantiacum or commonly known orange poppy, has spread widely throughout Mongolia, has high alkaloids and has been known to have anti-pyretic and wound healing properties. Aim: Our purpose for this study was to determine the effects of poppy extract in vivo and in vitro conditions. Materials and Methods: We have prepared an ethanol and water extracts as 1:20 dilution from the poppy. We studied antimicrobial properties of the ethanol and water extracts against S.aureus (ATCC-29213), E.coli (ATCC-51755), P.aeruginosa (ATCC-27853), S.enterica (ATCC-13076), S.epidermidis (ATCC-35924), A.baumannii (ATCC-19606) standard strains and determined minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations (MIC, MBC). In order to determine the wound healing properties, we utilized 30 mice, divided them into 5 groups with 6 animals: healthy, control, comparative, ethanol extract and water extract. We induced acute wound on the back skin of all animals, and compared the body weight, clinical symptoms of the animals, and studied the duration of wound healing, histological changes on the 7th, 14th and 21st experimental days. Results: The ethanol and water extracts resulted in 25% of dry ingredient. Ethanol extract had the MBC of 6.25 µl against P.aeruginosa, S.aureus, Acinetobacter, S.epidermidis strains, and 12.5 µl against E.coli. Water extract had the MBC of 25 µl against E.coli S.enterica P.aeruginosa S.aureus, and 50 µl against Acinetobacter, S.epidermidis strains. When the results of wound healing were compared on last (21st) day of the experiment, control group wound was 20±3.7мм2 in size, comparative group was 16.3±2.9мм2, ethanol extract group was 13±2.7мм2 and the wound on water extract group animals was completely healed. The comparison of wound size on each experimental days in extract group with control group showed a statistically significant change (p=0.007) or healing property. Conclusion: Ethanol and water extracts from Papaver rubro-aurantiacum shows antimicrobial properties in vitro, as well as shows wound healing properties by decreasing inflammatory infiltrations, and supporting regeneration of the skin layers.
