Abstract

Background: The musk has been widely used in traditional Mongolian medicine for the treatment of pain, pneumonia, epilepsy, and antibacterial diseases. Objectives: Therefore, the present study aimed to study the effect of Siberian musk deer’s musk on capsaicin-induced colitis. Materials and methods: According to the method of (J.M. Laird 2001), 10% 50 µl capsaicin solution was injected rectally into laboratory white mice to induce colitis. 15 minutes later, tissue from the hypothalamus of the brain was removed and endothelin and TRPV1 receptors were identified. Four days before the experiment, healthy and control groups mice received distilled water and the experimental 3 groups were given musk with the doses of 118 mg/kg, 236 mg/kg, and 590 mg/kg, and the comparative group administered 2 mg/kg of morphine orally. Results: The study revealed that the TRPV1 receptor was 7.56 ± 0.4pg/ml in the control group, by showing a statistically significant increase of 37% compared with the healthy group, suggesting that capsaicin was the cause of colitis. Musk’s doses of 236 and 590 mg/kg significantly reduced TRPV1 receptor level were by 61-62% respectively (p=0.001). The amount of endothelin-1 protein in the control group increased by 32% from the healthy period, the dose of musk was 590 mg / kg, and the dose of morphine 2 mg / kg decreased by 18-24.1% (p = 0.01). Conclusions: The results show that musk has an anti-inflammatory or analgesic effect by reducing the amount of TRPV1 receptor and endothelin-1 protein, which are selectively activated during acute inflammation and pain caused by capsaicin.
